Decuir produced a video for the Virginia Department of Education, which is led by Atif Qarni, instructing educators on how to teach about 9/11, which said:
We are not going to reproduce a false assumption of Muslim responsibility for 9/11. We’re just going to begin right there and name that there is no responsibility… We’re also not going to reproduce what’s understood as American exceptionalism… You name what happened and that’s it. There’s no need to further describe it, embellish it, name them, provide details. That’s not relevant… Don’t reproduce a single American narrative, that there’s only one way to understand 9/11.
With the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks very fresh on my mind, I found this article (and there are many others of a like kind, unfortunately) to be terribly sad and, dare I say, offensive. There have always been some, I suppose, who view history as fluid or changing rather than static. I would have to disagree. Those who would seek to “change” history seek to do the truly impossible. History is history. There is no changing it. The past is fixed relative to the present. There is no force that can be brought to bear upon events of the past which will in any way change their historical status. Historical fact will remain historical fact no matter what force of present day angst is brought to bear against it. And even as so many fight to redefine past events, it should be noted that this present moment, this very second is right now in the process of becoming a part of the past.
If truth is what we’re after, then here’s a truth for you: There is zero possibility of remolding the past to make it more palatable; and what is more, there is no sanity in the attempt. The events of the past are over and done with. The 10 seconds that it has taken me to write these few sentences are gone. I can’t get that time back again. Could I erase all this and start my paragraph over again? Sure. But even that wouldn’t change the fact that I wrote something else prior to what you are now reading. Erase the past? Hmm… not gonna happen. Change the past? Um, no. There is One Person who holds the past, present and future in His hands and from what I can tell, He’s a lot more interested in the future than He is in the past. Maybe that should tell us something.
The past can, if clearly seen and understood, speak to and inform the present and even cast illumination onto the future. The problem that we run into, though, and that causes us to bang our heads into walls over and over and over again is that we attempt, from the present, to fix the mistakes of the past. However good hearted and even necessary we may feel it to be to try to change something done in the recent or far distant past it is just NOT POSSIBLE! History cannot be remade. Even making amends does not actually change history. It may change a consequence of an action that took place at an earlier time, but the historical record is still there. And while making amends or granting forgiveness (the ultimate and, may I say, only reparation needed) is awesome, history itself is not changed.
Simply wanting something to be different does not make it so. And believing that it does is two year old reasoning. We’re not toddlers. Put on your big boy pants, people. Throwing temper tantrums just puts you in time out: It doesn’t get you what you want. At least if we lived in a just society, it wouldn’t. Tearing down and defacing historical and religious icons and monuments, cancel culture, woke ideology, blaming everything on systemic racism and white supremacy, politically correct (PC) speech which changes the meaning of words and phrases with the intent of controlling how we think, government overreach, radical agenda indoctrination of our school children… the list goes on: These are the actions and attitudes of bullies – no different than a toddler throwing a fit as a means of manipulating you to get what they want. Putting spin on an event or downright lying about the circumstances surrounding an historical situation does not change the actual truth of what happened. It may make you feel better to write or read or hear that such and so occurred in such a way, but the truth will always say different.
There are enough, and I mean mountains upon mountains, of terrible, horrible, tragic mistakes and missteps being made today, now, in the present, that need our attention. Dwelling on the past, trying to fix what cannot possibly be fixed is futile, divisive and destructive. Looking at everything and everyone through the lens of race isn’t gonna fix anything. How can anyone even reasonably think so? There was a time in this country, not so long ago, when white and black men and women sat down together to converse. Together. How does segregating children into different classrooms based on the color of their skin fit into the world that those men and women fought so hard to build?

These are just two examples of the way the radical left, the social justice warriors (SJW), critical race theory (CRT) proponents, the alphabet soup agenda, (yes, it’s probably rude, but I just hate writing LGBT… blah blah blah…) are forcing us; we, the people, to change the way we view ourselves and our history. I don’t like it and I won’t accept it. Muslims are responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and our children and grandchildren need to know it.
Great commentary Janelle! I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion. Keep up the good work.
